The Head of National Office for the West African Certificate Examination in Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut, announced on Monday that 8,285 candidates have registered for the first series of the Computer-Based West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates in 2024.

During a press conference in Lagos, Dangut disclosed that the examination is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, January 31, to Saturday, February 17, 2024, across Nigeria.

The move to a computer-based model was announced in November 2023, with the Council facing some initial resistance to the innovation.

Dangut acknowledged the initial skepticism but noted that the acceptance of the computer-based model is evident in the number of entries received. Out of the total candidates registered, 3,949 are male, representing 47.66%, and 4,336 are female, representing 52.3%.

The examination will cover 19 subjects, with a total of 26 papers to be conducted in a hybrid mode. In this mode, objective or multiple-choice questions will be presented on-screen, and candidates must provide their responses on the screen.

Essay and practical questions will also be presented on-screen, but candidates will use answer booklets to submit their responses.

Dangut urged candidates to visit WAEC’s e-learning portal for materials demonstrating the requirements for the CB-WASSCE.

He emphasized the collaboration with education authorities, security agencies, and stakeholders to ensure the successful and credible conduct of the examination.

The West African Examinations Council has restated that all withheld results in its examinations were as a result of alleged malpractices.

The Head, National Office, Mr Patrick Areghan, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lagos.

Areghan was speaking against the backdrop of reports in some sections of the media, accusing the council of deliberately withholding results of candidates supposedly for the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

“Our attention has been drawn to reports in some quarters of how the council was deliberately withholding results of candidates of some states in the country.

“This, I will say, is wicked, malicious, misleading and a calculated attempt to drag the name of council into the mud or disrepute. It is utter ignorance.

“For emphasis, any candidate that has his or her result withheld is as a result of alleged examination malpractice.

“After necessary investigations of all alleged examination malpractice cases, innocent candidates would have their results released, while the guilty ones will have that subject or entire results cancelled.

“This will be as directed by the Nigeria Examinations Committee,” the WAEC boss stated.

He added that as much as the examination body was willing and ready to maintain cordial relationships with all its stakeholders, threatening to take the council to court some persons over the development was uncalled for.

“We have our evidence though and anyone in doubt can approach us. We are always ready to present our side, anywhere we are called upon to do.

“We stand by our rules and regulations. We will always apply the same set of laws all over the country, no matter what it takes or who is involved.

“We will never apply different sets of laws for different states in the country, or give any preferential treatment to any candidate, school, or state for that matter.

“We will continue to contribute our quota to national development by delivering quality services, in a bid to sanitise the system,” Areghan added.

The West African Examinations Council, Nigeria, has said the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates, 2022, will take place between May 16 and June 23 2022 in Nigeria.

The Head of Nigeria Office, WAEC, Patrick Areghan, while briefing the newsmen on Monday, said the exam would take a period of six weeks, adding that the revert to May/June period for the conduct of the examination should be celebrated.

Recall that in the heat of the Covid-19 pandemic, WAEC shifted the date of WASSCE to two months after the normal date, that is from August to September.

“Gentlemen of the Media, I am delighted to inform you that the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2022 will take place between May 16 and June 23 2022 in Nigeria, spanning a period of six (06) weeks.

“The revert to May/June period for the conduct of the examination should be celebrated. The significance of this is that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the various member States, save Ghana, have now again found a common ground in respect of their academic calendars.

“This shows a massive recovery from the devastating effects, disruptions, and confusion caused by the pandemic. We must give kudos to the Honourable Minister of Education and his Ministry for this wonderful feat”.

He explained that the final International Timetable for the conduct of the examination had been sent to all schools for their proper and necessary guidance.

Areghan also said a total of 1,607,975 candidates from 20,221 schools had registered for the examination.
