The UK government has announced that all 11 countries will be removed from the UK’s travel red list from 4 am on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe are countries placed on the list in late November after the emergence of the Omicron variant.

However, UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the Omicron variant had spread so widely that the rules no longer make much effect.

He told parliament today, Dec. 14: “Now that there is community transmission of Omicron in the UK and Omicron has spread so widely across the world, the travel red list is now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad. Whilst we will maintain our temporary testing measures for international travel we will be removing all 11 countries from the travel red list effective from 4 am tomorrow morning.”

Currently, all UK arrivals from red list countries must pay for and self-isolate in a pre-booked, government-approved hotel for 10 days. They must also take Covid tests within 48 hours of setting off for the UK and PCR tests within two days of their arrival.

Zimbabwe has made it illegal for schools to expel pupils who get pregnant, a measure aimed at tackling gender inequality in the classroom and discouraging many girls from dropping out of school.

According to Zimbabwean media, a legal amendment was announced last week and it seeks to reinforce a 1999 guideline that was patchily implemented. The decision was reportedly made over fears of a rise in sexual abuse and unwanted pregnancies as schools have been closed since the Coronavirus pandemic struck.

Many parents of pregnant girls, or the girls themselves, decide to quit schooling due to the pregnancy, and schools do not always do enough to encourage them to stay, officials say.

Cain Mathema, the education minister in charge of schools, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation this week “I’m expecting every parent and guardian and everyone else to understand that every child must be assisted by all of us to go to school. Every child whether boy or girl… has a right to go to school in Zimbabwe,” he said.

New reports says that former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe died from cancer after a chemotherapy treatment which was no longer effective was stopped at a Singaporean hospital he was admitted in.

A state-owned newspaper reported that President Emmerson Mnangagwa made the disclosure while addressing party members in New York where he is attending this week’s United Nations General Assembly, but he did not disclose the type.

Mnangagwa was quoted saying by The Herald newspaper on Monday saying “Treatment had stopped, doctors had stopped treatment, chemotherapy, one, because of age and also because the cancer had spread and it was not helping anymore”.

WikiLeaks reported in 2011 that the former leader had prostate cancer which also affected other organs. The report was denied by top government officials at that time.

Former Zimbabwe National Army Chief of Staff Major General Trust Mugoba is dead. Mugoba died at a private hospital in Harare a week after he was admitted with an undisclosed ailment.

This is coming just a few hours after the demise of ex-resident, Robert Mugabe. According to government spokesman Nick Mangwana, ‘he passed away early this morning”.

Mugoba left his post in March 2017 after he was seconded to the African Union where he assumed the position of Chief of Staff of the continental’s body’s Stand-by Force. It was only months after Mugoba’s departure that Zimbabwe’s military moved against longtime ruler Robert Mugabe, ousting him in a coup in November 2017.

The Confederation of African Football have come out to say that the body is not investigating allegations of match- fixing involving Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations following their 4-0 defeat to DR Congo.

Zimbabwean newspaper The Herald reported that DR Congo could be kicked out of the tournament by CAF for trying to influence the result of the match against The Warriors on June 30 after a report by the Zimbabwe FA.

But the General Secretary of CAF, Mouad Hajji said that no official complaint has been received over the group stage game and the body isn’t carrying out any investigation.

Hajji said “At the level of the CAF, there is no suspicion, there is no hint of corruption about the Zimbabwe- DRC match in the third Group A match played on June 30, in Cairo. But if it turned out that there was anything and not only for this match, I remind you that our policy is a zero tolerance policy on corruption. As of today, there is no correspondence or issue.”

A Madagascan newspaper is reporting that, multimillionaire owner of TP Mazambe, Moise Katumbi, allegedly bribed Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze to underperform in DR Congo’s 4 – 0 win over the Brave Warriors in their final Group A clash on June 30.

According to the report, “A large sum of money was supposed to be transferred into the bank of the Zimbabwean goalkeeper but the transaction was not completed after an Egyptian bank raised the red flag and reportedly declined to handle the issue.”

It is allegedly, Katumbi paid a large amount of money to Chipezeze to allow DR Congo score at will. Substitute keeper Chipezeze, who only played in the match after first- choice George Chigova picked up an injury during the warm- up, refused to comment on the issue , saying he’s been advised not to respond to the reports.

However, Katumbi sent a statement to CAF, denying all allegations and calling them partial fiction and poor journalism.

The statement reads “Mr. Katumbi formally denounces these accusations English. Mr. Katumbi would wish to underline that by the time these alleged accusations happened, he had already left Egypt. So it was physically impossible for him to approach any players. His passport confirms this and a copy of that is attached to this letter.”
