Technical faults throw Abuja, P’Harcourt into blackout

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc has said residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are currently experiencing a power outage.

The power outage, according to AEDC, was a result of a major technical fault on a 15 MVA, 33/11kV power transformer at 1×15 MVA, M44 Charley Boy Injection Substation.

Areas affected by the technical fault include Gwarimpa, Roads 63, 64, 69, lya Kasuwa, Adkan Estate Gwarimpa, and environs.

Management of AEDC expressed regret that the repair of this transformer might linger till January 22, due to the scope of work required to be done.

While appealing for the understanding of its customers, the AEDC said its engineers were working ‘tirelessly’ to restore electricity to affected areas.

In a statement on Friday night, the AEDC said, “Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc wishes to notify its esteemed customers in (Gwarimpa, Abuja) Roads 63, 64, 69 and environs, lya Kasuwa and environs, Adkan Estate Gwarinpa and environs, that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a major technical fault on 15 MVA, 33/11kV Power Transformer at 1 x15 MVA, M44 Charley Boy Injection Substation serving these areas.

“Unfortunately, the repairs of this transformer may linger till Monday, January 22, 2024, due to the scope of work required to be done.

“We appeal for your understanding as our team of engineers is working tirelessly to achieve the restoration of the supply of electricity to these areas. We regret any inconvenience caused.”

Similarly, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc informed its customers that the outage being experienced in the Rivers State capital since Thursday was “as a result of loss of supply from Afam 132KV line”.

The outage, it said, was “to enable our team to repair the faulty conductor wire” at Port Harcourt Town Transmission Station.

The areas affected include Port Harcourt Town, PH Main and Rumuosi Transmission Stations.

PHED customers were assured that the power supply would be restored as soon as work is completed.
