Turkish opposition leader attacked at soldier’s funeral

At a military funeral in Ankara, protesters have attacked the leader of Turkey’s main opposition party.

While attending a memorial on Sunday, (CHP) Republican People’s Party chief, Kemal Kilicdaroglu was set upon by an angry crowd.

With some crowds even attempting to land blows, footage revealed he was pushed and shoved around.

Thankfully, he was able to take shelter in a nearby house which was provided by the security forces until the crowd dispersed.

Mr Kilicdaroglu attended the funeral to pay last respects to a Turkish soldier who was killed near the border with Iraq.

And according to Anadolu state news agency, it first started as a protest against Mr Kilicdaroglu, but his prolonged presence there caused the protest to descend into violence against him.

It has not been immediately clear if Mr Kilicdaroglu has been injured, but CHP confirmed the attack.

His party later said in an interview with the AFP news agency that Mr Kilicdaroglu “is fine” while his office has announced that the culprits of the incident will be responded to with legal action.

Mr Kilicdaroglu has been criticized by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AKP party and nationalist politicians for his connections with HDP, a pro-Kurdish party.

He was accused of cooperating with the pro-Kurdish party which the government has linked to Kurdish militants.
